How to Overcome Writer’s Block You may have been plagued by writer's block before. It is a common problem that many people experience, usually without much warning. Writer's block takes away from time spent making content, gets in the way of deadlines, and makes you feel like you're not accomplishing anything. While it can be difficult to overcome writer's block, there are a few tips you should try! What actually causes writer's block? One of the most widely accepted causes for writer's block is focus issues. This can include distractions or anxiety about how to write your piece or build your characters correctly. If you're having a tough time constructing a piece or sit down to write and you can't seem to come up with anything good, you should consider making a note of the distractions that are pulling your focus away from doing your writing. If these distractions occur often, consider eliminating them from your environment or changing the time you work to avoid them. This will allow you to get in the zone! In addition to distractions, Writer's block often occurs because writers aren't capable of breaking apart their pieces into smaller parts. If you find yourself stuck when it comes time for writing your piece, take a minute to separate out each part that you have written in the original draft. You can edit each piece separately as it is written, choose the best parts to build on, and make changes as needed. What may be a struggle for you one minute may be a piece of cake the next! If you're looking for inspiration for your characters, try writing about something that inspires you. Write down what you would do and would love to read happen to your characters, and see if they work well together. You may also consider reading what similar characters have done before and how they turned out. Another reason for Writer's Block is probably an abundance of ideas floating through your head! If this is the case, break them down into several smaller pieces so that they can be more easily digested. If you're constantly worried about writer's block, consider creating a schedule for yourself that will allow you to stay focused on your writing. What topics do you want to write about? Make a list and then place them on a schedule. It's always easier to create something when it's needed, whether it's for school or even just for fun! • Before you start writing, set aside some time to think of ideas. • When the feeling of writer’s block begins, take time to separate parts of your original piece or create new ideas based on what you’ve already written. • When you’re done with the part you’ve chosen, move on to the next. This will help break the writing process down into segments, which will ultimately allow you to get out of your head and create content! • If you find that you don’t have any ideas, consider brainstorming. Write down everything that comes to mind that could possibly be included in your piece or series. You can then choose what to keep and what to start over with again.
